Game Night
I organize and host a monthly get-together for people who enjoy social and
board games. I've been doing it for years and have met some great people - come
join us. Currently I have a Facebook group, an informal email list, and a Meetup
group. The Meetup group has web site fees associated with it so we're exploring
other options. But come and check it out:
Because space is limited, it is recommended that you sign
up as soon as possible if you'd like to attend. As a courtesy, please also change
your RSVP status if your plans change and you won't attend. When the RSVP list
is full other people are waiting to take your spot.
Read about some of the games we like to play.
In general, Game Night follows the following process:
- We limit it to no more than 15-20 people. It's much more fun to all play
together if possible.
- To help mitigate the fact that we have well over 500 people in the group,
we do "Themes" to narrow down attendance since no one has a house
that can hold 500 people. Themes may include Music Games - Drawing
Games - No Limit Texas Hold 'em - Improv Comedy Games - Euro (Strategy) Games
- etc, etc.
- If you have a room in your home that can accomodate 10 to 20 people, please
contact me to sign up to be a host. We
need hosts.
- The event generally begins at 7 PM on a Saturday of each month. Which Saturday
it is, is chosen by the host.
- Details on what to bring and costs, if any, will be sent to you/posted
on the event page. Sometimes it is a Pot Luck. We appreciate any food that
is good-tasting.
- Bring a friend too. Doesn't have to be good-tasting.
- Much laughter will ensue.
A little Game Night History
Our Game Night was started at the end of 2001 when my friends and I noticed
we weren't all getting together as much as we'd like. Game Night was instituted
as a way to be sure to see each other regularly. In 2006 I took Game Night online
to "My People Connection" and in September of 2007, Game Night became
part of the 20s to 40s Game Meetup.
I later went on to become "organizer" of the group at large
when the previous organizer, Christina, decided to start a new meetup.
In spring of 2008, we both got a mention in an article
about Game Nights in the Washington Post Express.
Some of the Games
My sister Janel and I collect games and here are some of the ones we've purchased. Click for more info on each. NOTE! This is only a small example of the games! If you don't like the sound of these, bring something else! We are always looking for new games to play.
- Curses - probably the funniest game ever invented, a brilliant and simple concept I wish I'd thought of. Your silly friends will shine but your serious friends will be the most hilarious of all!
- Why Did the Chicken? - Similar to Fictionary/Balderdash but instead of making up definitions, you create funny or clever riddles, basing your efforts on the person whose turn it is, who will be choosing the riddles she likes best.
- Cranium (Turbo Edition) - a fusion of Charades, Pictionary, Name That Tune, Trivial Pursuit, Cluzzle, improv comedy and more, Cranium is the Microsoft of board games, assimilating everything in its path, with very fun results. In the Turbo Edition, you have the added challenge of learning how to use the timer ;)
- Beyond Balderdash - the updated version features additional categories besides definitions.
- Encore - to win this game you'll need to know some songs and know how to sing pieces of them... but you don't have to sing well to do well and have fun!
- Outburst - a fast and fun game of shouting out all the things you can think of in a given category.
- Imaginiff - perhaps best for players who know each other well, but recently a player who'd known people the shortest amount of time came out the big winner. Given six choices, players must vote by secret ballot for the choice they think best fits another player, a friend, or a famous figure. Majority rules - even if the player in question does not vote with the majority. This game can be very funny.
- Snorta
- loud and funny barnyard animal game. QUACK!!!
Some games we've learned about from friends or the internet:
- Werewolf - based on a game called Mafia invented by a Soviet professor of Psychology in 1986, this is a fun game of bluffing/reading other players. Very psychological and cool.
- Exquisite Chicken - based on Exquisite Corpse, this is a game of creating funny or absurd cartoons- first the images, then the captions.
- Two Lies and a Truth - just what it says, make up two true sounding lies and think of the most false-sounding thing about yourself and try to fool everyone. Good for getting to know people.
- Sumptuous Susan - Introduce yourself with an alliterative adjective, and identify everyone else who's introduced themselves. Another similar game is to go around the circle but say your name and one interesting thing about yourself. The last person to go obviously has the greatest challenge.
Some games Erica and/or I have made or have in the works:
What other games do you know about. Let me know! Perhaps one of these?:
